Artist's Statement
My family immigrated to British Columbia from Finland when I was 9 years old. For the past 17 years, Whitby, Ontario has been home where my husband and I raised three children, several rats, and two dogs.
Early discouragement from authority figures led me to believe I would never be what I most wanted to be - an artist. So I decorated cakes & vegetable platters to satisfy the need to create. Recurring annual bouts of pneumonia led me to finally believe God has gifted me with the ability to create art. The two most instrumental courses I took were woodcarving (1997 who remembers Nautilus?) and colour (2004).
I thank God for bringing into my life several gifted local teachers who have made a huge impact on me: Ruth Read, Sabrina Cordi, Tim Parker, and others; and for Gerry Divaris, (Cedar Ridge Carving Guild) and Jay Dampf (Haliburton).
My work - devoted to my passions: wood carving, colour, and bringing the outdoors in - has been in juried shows and is in collections across Canada and the US.
Since this gift and the time and money to pursue it come from God, all but basic costs for supplies for each work sold is donated to charities dealing primarily with children which I have visited and checked out.
I get to have fun, create, learn, bring beauty to some homes and life to others and please God. It doesn't get any better than this.
